Thanx to a posting in a news group, I think I know what caused my AVS Anti-virus problem. It was my Sygate Personal Firewall. It seems that AVS has a setting that interferes with Sygate that causes lack of network access.
I want to thank "Art" from the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup for pointing me in the right direction. Armed with that info, I can adjust the settings for AVS not to scan my network for "threats".
