Of Duke University, Strippers, lacrosse, and Racism

Being a UNC Tarheel fan, I could have a lot of fun with this, or at least thumb my nose at all the Dookies and ABC (Anybody But Carolina) fans, but this is a serious issue. We are looking at a national scandal of a very prestigious school.

If you have not heard, a stripper, who attends a nearby predominantly black university, was hired by the Duke men's lacrosse team to perform at a party. She alleges that she was gang raped, sodomized, and forced to perform oral sex for over 30 minutes. Her alleged attackers were white. Every member of the team was requested to give a DNA sample except for one. The only black athlete on the Duke lacrosse team.

You could look at this from a few different angles, but the one PoV (point of view) that sticks out is the fact that race is a major factor here. The lacrosse team is predominantly white, the stripper is black. The stripper goes to a predominantly black university (North Carolina Central University) while her alleged attackers attend a predominantly white school.

We know that rape is a crime of violence that is meant to humiliate the victim. Forced sexual activity, especially anal and oral is humiliating and since race has always been an issue (especially in Durham, NC), it doubles the emotional pain.

Now with that in mind, we have a couple of conclusions. Either the young woman was raped or she is inventing the story. If she was raped, then the men should be punished severely. If she is inventing this, using race as a motivator, then she should be charged with a hate crime.

I am not going to say any woman deserves rape, however females should not put themselves in a situation where they are teasing or tempting men (dancing naked in front of strangers in their apartments/dorms/homes). I will be the first to admit the female body is very pleasing to the eye, but we have to exercise control and as Christian men, we have to turn our eyes away from things that will instill lust and desire in our hearts. Hanging around strippers will not help!
