If you follow the tech industry at all you may have heard that HP Enterprise, the Enterprise (business sales/support) recently announced that they were spinning off there Enterprise Services division to form a new company with Computer Sciences Corp (CSC). Being a part of HPE-ES, I will be part of that spin off. While I am in no doubt this will be a good financial move for stockholders and the respective companies, I don't know how the employees will fare in this. I want to be optimistic but a lot of HPE-ES people are long time EDS employees with a lot of years under their belt and this next change will be hard.
HPE-ES being spun off and merged is in some ways going back to being EDS. I never was EDS...I was HP which bought out the IT support of my previous employer, Ericsson, who is my current customer. Then HP bought EDS, then HP split into HP and HPE. I ended up in HPE and now unless I get RiF'ed (Reduction in Force...laid off) I will be part of the new company which I am UNOFFICIALLY calling ES-CSC. That is not the name (No one knows the new name yet), just my pet name for it until we are officially notified.
After the spin off and merge was announced, I got notice that I would be uprooted from my cube in the HQ and moved to the Data Center...with no assigned cube. I have to carry what I need in my packpack each day. It has been an adjustment as the DC is not as heavily populated at HQ so a lot of my creature comforts are gone...not to mention 2 sweet L7.5 Ingress portals. I have to drive over to glyph hack them. Gone is covered parking, fully stocked break rooms, a bright sunny environment, and a cube I can leave all my stuff in on a semi-permanent basis. First world problems, I know. I am happy to still be employed, at least for the time being.
Recently, I celebrated 20 Service Years with HPE (7.5 with Ericsson, 12 with HP, and .5 years with HPE). Part of the celebration was a gold colored doo-dad to hook on my lanyard and the other part was my choice of several items in an online catalog. To be honest if I were healthy I would have gotten the Kayak but since I am not really strong enough to physically exert myself like that, I was at a loss on what to chose. They had a lot of sporting equipment, jewelry, and tech stuff but nothing resonated with me. Then I saw the HP 11 G4 Chromebook and said, "what the heck" and ordered it. In a couple of weeks it arrived and I gave it a run.
Short version? I love it. Long version to come a bit later. My hand is tired from the typing.
